“Our flag doesn’t mean race, it’s a heritage thing,” unnamed speaker.

A SYMBOL OF RACIAL HATRED AND AMERICAN APARTHEID — My children have six DNA ancestors who fought for the Union, and six who fought for the Confederacy. So I understand the “heritage” rationale offered by supporters of the Confederate battle flag who deny its association with racism. Yet we merely look no further than the words of W. T. Thompson who designed one of the Confederate flags during the American Civil War. His design was the now-familiar “stars and bars” on a prominent field of white. He dubbed it “the white man’s flag.” He declared, “As a people we are fighting to maintain the heaven ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior, or colored race. A white flag would thus be emblematic of our cause….Such a flag would be a suitable emblem of our young confederacy ….and be hailed as THE WHITE MAN’S FLAG.” The all caps are his! So, let’s hear the response from the people who say the flag is not about racism. No other answer can be offered. The flag represents a legacy of hate, a culture of hate, a heritage of hate. It’s time it came down from any and all places representing our government, from local to federal. Let if fall from the weight of the hubris of those who display it and those who insist it has nothing to do with racism, bigotry and hate, when that is most of what it truly stands for.
