                                                            “Nigger?”

Imagine awakening one day in the third largest (most populated) city in America and thinking it is such a beautiful day, you would take your three children to a city beach. You live in Chicago and Lake Michigan beckons. You might think and say, “We as a family do not take advantage of life’s precious moments with our children and today will be different.”

                     .

Yes, a day at the beach to enjoy sun, surf splashing, wind, concession stand goodies (maybe even a corn dog with mustard or ice cream bars) joviality and relaxation. You feel comfortable with your opportunity to enjoy nature in a safe environment in the height of daytime hours.  No criminals, less prospect of random gunfire, the security of the city’s North Shore with one of the nationals most attractive skylines with mere yards. You are on Oak Street Beach.

Can life get any better?

You believe you are well away from any environment in which you and your children should feel they are not welcome due to race.  Yes, you are African-American and in Chicago, you mistakenly feel the Mason Dixon Line is hundreds of miles away. You are feel you are well away from racial paradigms (bigotry, bias, intolerance and racism) that might expose your kids to heinous people who could ruin their moment with blatant racism. You might even think your residence in the city of the nation’s president might also provide a degree of security from those horrific southern racists;  a president who happens to be black!

You have forgotten about the following episode from New York State. An
African-American man headed to work stopped to purchase toothpaste at a local Dollar General. After the purchase he leaves the retail establishment and starts his truck. Apparently, the truck engine frightened a couple of kids who appeared to have free froliking reign across the front of the building while their mother talks on a cell phone.

The segment commentator didn’t bother to show the moment when the boy cupped his hands around his mouth and also called the driver an obscenity.

We tend to forget such interactions. Like many Americans, we point towards the southern states (Red States) with our fingers over our noses and cast disparaging remarks about racial intolerance and exhibitions of white privilege.

Yes, we are in a major US city, on the beach, kids are enjoying the water, and one kid flings a bit of water of a local “stand-up” comic who happens to be a white person. As implied via the New York story above, you may have even lost track of the fact you are in a nation where your race has to be a consideration of life from morning through the next morning 24/7, 365 days per year.

You are Raquel Bolton; you and your children are reminded of white privilege and the unacceptable nature of a excited young mind flinging water while having fun at the beach.

The Chicagoist
The mother Raquel Bolton posted a video of the confrontation on Facebook and she explains what happened shortly before:

While at the beach #oakstreetbeach this lady called us the N Word three times in front of my children all because they splashed water on her. I asked her to stop yelling at the kids and said I’ll call the police. She walked in my face twice yes I could’ve reacted but I didn’t. Yes I thought this lady was going to spit or put hands on me first because that’s how angry she was….here’s her response.

The woman being confronted is saying the n-word just as the camera starts filming. Then she says, “Of course you haven’t graduated and you don’t know the Constitution of the United States and what it says.”

Bolton responds, “Of what? That you could just walk around calling somebody a nigger?”

The woman responds, “Yes, it’s called free speech in America. Right to free speech. Look it up.”

Now take a look at how The Frisky reported the story. You will notice the woman is sitting near the surf and kids are moving around from the water as people tend to do once they decide to exit the surf.

If you are one who abhors any mention of race from people who are not white, you may not care for what comes next.

There is no way you nor anyone else who follows this story can deny the overwhelming pervasiveness of racist acts in the nation. This “stand-up” comic visits a city beach that has a black population which also have rights to enjoy nature. She apparently flopped her ass near the surf replete with inner hatred of other beach lovers who are not white people. She sits there possibly fuming with hatred and opted for the first and most minuet instance of “infringement” of here ‘white rights.’ Would she have acted similarly if the kid had been white? We will never know. The question a moot point because the “stand-up” comedian literally cloned the behavior of the Dollar General shopper in New York State.  Thus, she exercised white privilege, while labelling the mother uneducated and cited the US Constitution that makes her word “OK.”.

Does the US Constitution grant citizens the right to yell fire in a theater? Does it grant whites the right to feel free to disparage any black person for any reason at any time?

The New York “N-word caller” story was updated via a radio program interview in which she declared herself as “I am not a racist, I have a black cousin.” I remind you the aggrieved man was told by authorities that he could press charges against the racist woman based on the content of the video.

The woman, identified as Janelle Ambrosia, responded to the altercation on 93.7 WBLK claiming she isn’t a racist.

Listen below.

Well, Ms. Ambrosia certainly lied to the interviewer, as she clearly has “problems with black people.”

The stand up comedian in Chicago, obviously has the same “problems.” A problem best describe as “racist.”
