The best way to assess character is to secure insight into the company a person keeps.
An illustration of the point comes clear when an informed person compares the Democratic National Convention to the cesspool fear circus of the Republican National convention.

We offer an image of our last point.

If you felt the GOP convention was a wholesome and worthwhile set of events, you must know by now you stand alone and opposite the vast majority of media experts and political pundits (even many conservative pundits).

We encourage you to witness the level to which your GOP vote will place a stamp on our nation, we encourage you to spend three minutes watching your run-of-the-mill Trump supporter. The video is ugly through and through. It depicts the very reason Donald Trump won the GOP nomination and transparentit exemplifies the roots of why each and every whtie supremacists and anti-Islamic bigot clings to the GOP.

If you can watch what follows and can not associate the behavior to what life was for milllions who quietly wathced and acquiesced as Adolf Hitler tookover Germany in the mid to late 1920s.

The New York Times deserves credit for the video and three of its reporters should receive a high-order of recognition for the work they accomplished.

Unfiltered Voices From Donald Trump’s Crowds

New York Times reporters have covered Donald J. Trump’s rallies for more than a year. His supporters at these events often express their views in angry and provocative ways. Here are some examples.

It seems the plug is coming unglued on the Trump campaigning and possible coming unglued on his retail empire.  One should consider if the Macy’s announcement and the New York Times video published was coincidental to the same day.

Racism: Thrives, Spreading and Yes You Have Seen It

Racism in America is alive, well, thriving and spreading. You might be a bit surprised at how racism has creeped into parts of the nation formerly considered insulted via tolerance for people of different cultures and ethnicity.

There are neighborhoods in Baltimore in which the life expectancy is 19 years less than other neighborhoods in the same city. Residents of the Downtown/Seaton Hill neighborhood have a life expectancy lower than 229 other nations, exceeded only by Yemen. According to the Washington Post, 15 neighborhoods in Baltimore have a lower life expectancy than North Korea.
North Korea.
And while those figures represent some of the most dramatic disparities in the life expectancy of black Americans as opposed to whites, a recent study of the health impacts of racism in America reveals that racist attitudes may cause up to 30,000 early deaths every year.
The study, Association between an Internet-Based Measure of Area Racism and Black Mortality, has just been published in PLOS ONE and has mapped out the most racist areas in the United States. As illustrated above, they are mostly located in the rural Northeast and down along the Appalachian Mountains into the South. How they did it and what it may mean are below the fold.
Some of the 50,000 Ku Kluxxers who marched in Washington, D.C., on August 8, 1925.

We already know about the racism that led to Jim Crow, the KKK, and lynchings. We also know about the racism that has become embedded in our justice system, from cops who kill, to prosecutors who ensure that blacks receive longer prison terms than do whites. We know that those sentencing disparities lead to greater disenfranchisement of blacks.

We think we know how racism has injured and killed black Americans. But do we really? There are the obvious cases, like Freddie Gray, Michael Brown, and Eric Garner, but what about the silent killers? The hypertension and the chronic medical conditions that lead so many more blacks to an early grave than they do whites. Could racist attitudes lead to 30,000 early deaths every year?
According to the authors of the study, current research points to a variety of causes for the disparities in health between white and black Americans, many of which can be traced to racial segregation. Many blacks are restricted to high-crime neighborhoods that are lacking in outdoor recreational areas, access to healthy foods, and decent health care. Discrimination in employment leads to lower wages that further impact the ability to enjoy healthy food, exercise, and recreation.
The authors also point out that:

… racial discrimination may also directly impact health by engaging psychobiological mechanisms induced in the stress response

Young woman displays her sign which reads

In other words, stress, especially chronic stress, is bad for your health. This isn’t really news. Experiences of racial discrimination are often accompanied by a sense of powerlessness, of anxiety, and of anger. These stressors, especially over a lifetime, can lead to negative health impacts. Jon Stewart did not know how right he was when he said, “If racism is something you’re sick of hearing about, imagine how exhausting it must be living it every day.”

As a source of chronic psychosocial stress, repeated racism may result in a heightened pro-inflammatory state that can have particularly detrimental consequences for the etiology and progression of cardiovascular and other immune disorders. Studies on discrimination have found evidence for adverse consequences for hypertension, atherosclerosis, and their inflammatory mediators. A recent study found that racism-related factors may also be associated with accelerated aging at the cellular level.

Past studies have had problems quantifying racism. They can look at localized institutional racism via housing and employment, or they can rely on self-reported incidents of racism. Of course, self-reported attitudes are difficult to verify and are subject to self-censorship, especially in regard to micro-aggressions and racism without a clear perpetrator, and institutional studies don’t actually reflect racist attitudes as much as their results.

The authors of this study have turned to internet searches using the “N-word” for help in finding areas of racist attitudes in America.

This measure, calculated based on Internet search queries containing the “N-word”, was strongly associated with the differential in 2008 votes for Barack Obama, the Black Democratic presidential candidate, vs. 2004 votes for John Kerry, the White Democratic presidential candidate.

The study authors used the designated market areas (DMA) as defined by the Nielsen Media Research. Residents within these DMAs generally receive their information from common television and/or radio broadcasts and newspapers, providing similar messages that influence racial attitudes. The authors make clear that not all searches for the “N-word” are due to racial bias and that not all residents in a DMA share racist attitudes, but the volume of the available data provides a high signal-to-noise ratio.

Using this information to find areas in which racism is alive and well, they then looked at black mortality rates using data from 2004–2009, collated by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). They examined four leading causes of death among blacks: heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. Unsurprisingly, they found a significant association between the racism indicated by the internet searches and an increase in black mortality.

Results from our study indicate that living in an area characterized by a one standard deviation greater proportion of racist Google searches is associated with an 8.2% increase in the all-cause mortality rate among Blacks. This effect estimate amounts to over 30,000 deaths among Blacks annually nationwide.
These findings indicate that area racism, as indexed by the proportion of Google searches containing the “N-word”, is significantly associated with not only the all-cause Black mortality rate, but also Black-White disparities in mortality.

Racism doesn’t just kill with a bullet to the back, it also kills by a thousand cuts, silently and mostly unnoticed.

Was it only a year ago that Ta-Nehisi Coates made the Case for Reparations? Reparations, hell, how about we stop killing black Americans first, and then discuss a way to repay them for the massive wrongs that have been done.

End The Daily Kos piece.
If you finished the piece and have thoughts like me about more detail related to overt racism and hate, the Southern Poverty Law Centers maintains a “Hate Map. The map facilitates much more detailed scrutiny of hate groups and is interactive down to the county and locale of such groups.

US racism continues to top the news! The killer was arrested, dressed in a white (of all colors) evidence protection suit and marched to a waiting squad car.

CBS News: Ryan Giroux, a 41-year-old ex-convict who has served three stints in state prison since 1994. A mug shot from the Arizona Department of Corrections shows him with several face and neck tattoos, including the word “skinhead” where his eyebrows normally would be
The killer racist has an extensive prison record with convictions from a 1994 burglary through theft, and aggravated assault. Apparently, his affinity for pot smoking also led to arrests and prison time. The Arizona Corrections System have reports Giruox revisited their facilities in late 1995, released a year later and again convicted and incarcerated in 2007 with a release from that stint in 2013.

Growing American Racism Via Nate Silver’s 538

In DEM, GOP, Growing American Racism, Nate Silver's 538, Racism and the vote, US racism on November 14, 2014 at 12:51 PM

As we move into a period of total federal government legislative dominance by the GOP couple with a Koch brothers pleasing SCOTUS, it should not surprise American racism is flourishing and spreading like a rapidly growing Bamboo forest.

In April of this year, Nate Silver’s 538 webpage offered a compelling read and look at racism among people who identify as Democrat vs Republican. The 538 piece writer was astute and careful in pointing out two distinct cautions relative to any survey regarding race.

Two warnings about this data. First, survey responses are an imperfect means of evaluating racism. Social desirability bias may discourage Americans from expressing their true feelings. Furthermore, the sample of Democrats and Republicans in the survey is not constant from year to year. If the partisan gap in racial attitudes toward blacks has widened slightly in the past few years, it may be because white racists have become more likely to identify themselves as Republican, and not because those Americans who already identified themselves as Republican have become any more racist.

Point will delineated and worthy of consideration.

A key point about my posting regarding the issue. Racism is not only a cognitive deficiency inherent in conservatives, the nation has progressive, liberal and independent racist and bigots. Life is about degrees and racism/bigotry is about overt/covert differentiation. Ultimately, and of even greater significance the meme above cuts through all of the flak and points directly at the essence of the 538 article. Which party or which ideology has a racist or bigoted core that leads to overt manifestation of behavior that is clearly racist? I posit the 538 piece, while worth a read, is only relevant if the reader takes the message out to its ultimate consideration: the exertion of political manipulation that leads to opportunity to exercise (social) power.

Sure, the GOP has more admitted racist, and or, bigots; the real story is which party occupies itself with ideology, policy and strategy that indicates racial superiority. Superiority that leads to platform for exercise “Social Power.”

Before I show a few examples from the 538 piece along with linking the piece, let’s take a run through a few graphics that provide irrefutable evidence of how one party exercises racism (subtle deep of off-hand) for political gain. We focus on the party vs. voters with consideration of how people vote. If the Party exercises the level of racism in the GOP, we can only assume the majority of conservative supporters (voters) hold views like views.

Kevin Phillips and Lee Atwater provided the basis for US politically expedient racism. Problem? Racism doesn’t roll-up like a rug after its utility is expended.

Kevin Phillips 1968

Lee Atwater 1981

The Political Carnival

“You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can’t say “nigger”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Nigger, nigger.”

Audio is even better than an image.

And, the ultimate illustration of GOP racism and exercise of social power is as follows. Notice the absence of 13% of the population form Mitt Romney’s 2012 website. Of course, the campaign include other racial minorities (people of color). However, let’s focus on racism as it relates to exercise of power regarding all people of color. What message did the website send to those who care about a fair and equitable nation?

A representative sample of graphics from the piece.  You really have to read the piece posted on 538 last April.
As stated previously, I am not naive enough to believe Democrats are markedly different regrading bigotry and forms of racism. I will unequivocally state, the major difference in whites who claim other ideology and party, is that we see and hear. I have yet to see a person who professed liberalism do this:

“Not all Republicans are racist, but if you are a racist chances are you are a Republican!”

The 538 piece basically adds validity to that we already know. The piece also points the 538 age shows data points and chart lines that tell a sad story about whites who responded to the survey. On a question to question basis, the data points in some charts appear far too close for any Democrat to find solace.

Whites Only Christian Event? Cross Burning? Racism Alive And Well In The US

In "Whites Only" Christian enclave, US racism on October 7, 2014 at 10:47 AM

The Young Turks and the “Whites Only” Christian enclave replete with ending cross burning.

This guy is the pastor!

Whites Only is becoming acceptable by far too many Americans.

The Young Turks and an exhibition of conservative/racist regressivism to a time long past in the United States.

In June 1964, James Brock dumped acid into the water at the Monson Motor Lodge in St. Augustine, Fla. He was trying to disrupt swimmers who were protesting the hotel’s whites-only policy.

We are fortunate we do not share any values with the people depicted above. Unfortunately, there are millions who not only share their ideology, they vote for politicians who by not speak-out against creeping racism, actually enable racism.
