Eric Smith·

Some people have asked me, as an African American, what has there been to be hopeful about in the seven years since Barack Obama was elected President of the United States? Well, the simple answer is that far more white people voted for President Obama than did black people and while percentage wise of course white support for the president was somewhat less than the percentage of African American votes the president received, the number of white people who voted for him was by no means insignificant. In fact, if white people had not supported President Obama in the numbers that they did, he would never have become president; period.
There is another reason this fact provides we African Americans a reason to be hopeful and that is in the seven years since President Obama assumed the presidency the racists among us have become more isolated and more easily identifiable. They figure that if they succeed in bringing about this race war they keep talking about that most, if not all white people, will join with them because they are white and anyone who has been paying attention these past seven years will immediately recognize that line of thinking for being the fatal miscalculation that it is for the racists will have only their fellow racists on their side and they will do battle not only with black people, but white people and all people who share a belief in equal justice and full equality for all. By dint of sheer numbers alone, that is a force that will be impossible for them to defeat.
On a personal level, I see hope in all the friends I have on Facebook and off who just happen to be white. I don’t bring attention to this fact (particularly to those racist white folks who have called me a racist) because I feel that doing so would cheapen the friendships by emphasizng color over friendship but I am not blind to how significant this is either.
You see it is much easier to fight and to stand tall when you neither fight nor stand alone. A diversified force which combines the unique strengths & talents of each group is always far more powerful than any force who’s members are limited to a particular race or creed
Some African Americans will argue that this kind of attitude bespeaks of one acknowledging the inherant weakness of our race and thus represents a betrayal to our cause. Yet expresssing sincere gratitude for the support & assistance of other races & creeds in fighting for a common cause is a sign of neither weakness nor betrayal. It is a sign of strength & good character as well as an acknowledgement of reality.
So in spite of how bad things are right now, I as an African American for again I know that I neither stand nor fight alone and that gives me more than enough reason to remain hopeful in spite of all that is now going on.

Racist white men fear a strong woman of any race as much as they fear men of color for to them both are a symbol of their emasculation; of their no longer being in control of all things. That is why while I have always been concerned for the safety of President Obama, the threat of any harm possibly coming to him has not kept me up at night since I regard such an event the same way I regard the outbreak of nuclear war; as triggering the final and total destruction of this country. So I don’t worry too much about this for an America so destroyed under those circumstances would leave behind a world that is in a much better place. Sadly, I cannot be equally certain that such a final result would follow in the wake of something terrible happening to a President Hillary Clinton. I am certain that those who hate President Obama because of the color of his skin & wish him harm know at a very fundamental level that if any harm were to befall him that they would be physically wiped out in very short order and would thus not be around to see the United States follow them into oblivion. I think this realization on their part & the part of I think practically everyone else, has been one of the factors sparing President Obama thus far; namely these individuals who so hate him simply don’t want to commit suicide for themselves or this country.

I am convinced that this feeling that they’re doing something crazy to a President Hillary Clinton would not amount to national suicide makes the dangers facing her more pronounced albeit less obvious to make no mistake, historically speaking sexism has been as much of a killer as racism has been.

For all intents & purposes, women are technically being lynched in this country every single day; be it their violently losing their lives at the hands of their partners, the denial of life-sustaining health car because they are women; women are under constant attack every single hour of every single day and in truth it matters not their race, sexual orientation, or economic status. Insecure men hate women who are strong and the idea that a woman could become President of the United States is as terrifying prospect for a sexist as the existence of a black President of the United States has been for a racist.

So while I pray for President Obama’s safety, I pray doubly hard for the safety of Hillary Clinton. The thought that the Secret Service & the rest of us may let our collective guard down should she become President of the United States because a person of color is no longer occupying the White House does indeed keep me up at night because again sexism is just as much of a killer in this country as racism and we would be fools to the umpteenth degree to ever lose sight of that fact.

Every time I step outdoors, for whatever rhyme or reason, I consciously ask myself, “Am I coming back inside? Is this going to be my time to die; the moment I meet my Maker?” I have long since made my peace with this possibility and at a very fundamental level I have no problem whatsoever with being killed.

At age fifty I know that I have already been Blessed with what for a black man in America constitutes a long life. If I die within the next week, the next day, or even within the next hour, I will know that as a black man that so called statistics notwithstanding that I have lived beyond my expiration date; that whatever time I have left, however long or short that time may be, that it is borrowed time.
This is the reality of being black in America. It doesn’t matter how old or how young you are. It doesn’t matter where you live or among whom. When you step outdoors death is right out there waiting for you, stalking you, and poised to strike and if by some chance it doesn’t happen to get you and you manage to return indoors alive to your loved ones, then it is sheer dumb luck more than anything else that death didn’t take you; that you managed to live to see another moment and maybe another day.

The following is what I just said to those Confederate flag supporters who posted on my page Boycott the states that wave the Confederate flag their love of that flag in general and slavery in particular. What I have written here is harsh that is true but I make zero apologies for it since it expresses exactly how I feel.
“Let me state in no uncertain terms that those of you who exercise your right to wave the Confederate flag, to celebrate it, are entirely on your own and by that I mean if any terrorist or terrorist organization, be they foreign or domestic, targets you for whatever rhyme or reason, you will have to fend for yourselves for no person of color with even an ounce of self respect and no person who rightly hates this flag, will either render you any kind of assistance once you are under attack, or warn the authorities that you are in imminent danger of being so attacked.
“You will be entirely on your own and have to fend for yourselves and justifiably so, because when you embrace this flag, you renounce this country and spit in the eyes of all who truly love it and what it represents.

“So again, celebrate this symbol of hate, treason, and racism if your wish but understand in no uncertain terms that if the rubber ever hits the road your fellow citizens of color and those who despise hate, treason, and racism, will do nothing for you whatsoever in the event you come under attack & it matters not by whom.

“Again, you will be entirely on your own. There have been times when I have seen a guy who had that flag on him getting beaten senseless and on every occasion I neither rendered that person any kind of assistance nor called for help.

“I merely ignored that person’s cries for help, turned my back on that individual, and quietly walked away and I have never once and I never will, regret my decision to do so. So again, celebrate this flag if you will, embrace it, but again know this and know this well, that if the rubber ever hits the road, you will be entirely on your own.”

Those chicken hawks in Congress, both Republican & Democrat alike, who seek to scuttle the new Iran nuclear deal, want to scuttle it not because they wish to look out for the best interests of Israel but because they want to look out for their own best interests and in their eyes nothing better serves their interests than wars.
For they have found that war is personally & politically profitable. It is personally profitable in that in wars the military industrial complex produces more weapons of war thus increasing its profits and these profits are in turn shared in the form of campaign contributions and gifts with those politicians of both parties who’s support of wars makes the business of war more profitable to the military industrial complex.
These chicken hawks in Congress who love war also find war to be politically profitable in that the memories of those killed in these wars become fodder for exploitation for their bloodies corpses are in turn used by these chicken hawks in Congress who’s policies sent them off to die, as props they place before the flag to show America & the world how “patriotic” they are, how much they love this nation, and how they so cherish liberty.
In each case, this is pure profit for these chicken hawks in Congress who are so eager to send the sons & daughters of their constituents off to fight & die in those wars they start, have no worries that their own sons & daughters will be sent off to fight & die in the wars they start as well.
It will not be the families of these chicken hawks in Congress who suffer from the pain of separation, who endure sleepless nights wondering whether or not those loved ones of theirs in harms way are at those very moments they lay awake being maimed or killed, and it will not be their families that will be forced to stare at an empty chair come Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter.
It will not be the families of these chicken hawks in Congress who so love war who will spend bittersweet anniversaries, weddings, graduations, and Foutth of Julys placing flowers & flags upon the graves of those loved of theirs who perished and it will not be the families of these chicken hawks in Congress who so love war who will be condemned to endure a lifetime of heartache over the memories of a lost father, mother, son, daughter, sister, or brother.
Any deal that pushes a needless war back for another day or year is a good deal. Any deal that gives diplomacy a chance to work is a good deal, and any deal that places the lives of people over profit by making a war less likely is a great deal.
The lives of our brave men & women in uniform should never be used as payment for personal or political profit but that is exactly how their lives are being used by these chicken hawks in Congress who are opposed to this new Iran nuclear deal; who lust for war and choke on the very idea of peace because they know that peace offers them no real potential for personal or political profit.
So let us truly honor the lives of those who serve by calling out these war loving chicken hawks in Congress for the profiteers in human life they really are. Let us remind the world that such conduct of theirs is neither patriotic or just; that the lives of those who so bravely serve mean far more to their families & this nation than to needlessly be maimed or destroyed not for the sake of protecting this country, but merely to increase the size of tha bank accounts & political profiles of those chicken hawks in Congress who seek to send them off to fight & die in needless wars not for America’s sake but merely for their own.

To all those Conservatives who aren’t millionaires and billionaires who keep accusing Liberals/Democrats of getting into their wallets & raising their taxes, how much better off financially were they overall after the tax cut administrations of President Reagan & both Presidents named Bush?

I mean did these folks experience personal economic boons while recessions decimated the personal finances of practically everyone else? Did their quality of life go up as unemployment & poverty rates did? Did those tax breaks over time help put more food on the table, make it easier for them to send their children to college, buy new & better homes and new cars?

Now did the opposite occur when taxes went up under the Democrats which also of course saw lower unemployment, more jobs, more educational opportunities, a Federal surplus, unprecedented economic growth, and lower deficits?

I can’t help but believe that this GOP lower taxes line is a modern day version of Ancient Rome’s bread & circuses; you know the kind of mindset in which the wealthy leadership says “sucker the masses by giving them table scraps of what they say they want & what we say they need in order to so occupy their attention that they are blinded to our own excesses.”

That’s what I get from this because in my soon to be fifty years on this Earth I have never seen any economic policy proposed by and implemented by a Republican/Conservative that has done anything other than tank our economy, raise the overall taxes of everyone who is not wealthy by throwing people out of work, increasing the gap between rich & poor, and placing people on the public dole who were not there before.

History has shown that the way to lower taxes for everybody is to put more people to work and that the way to do this is to invest in the people themselves in the form of job training, and providing whatever financial assistance is necessary for them to acquire that higher education which is necessary for them to acquire better paying jobs which will fill the tax coffers of our Federal government through the income taxes they will pay on those wages.

So again, I don’t get Conservatives thinking on this and that’s probably because it doesn’t make any sense; it never has, and again, history has borne that out.

A lot has been made of the recent looting/vandalism in the wake of the Grand Jury’s decision not to indict Officer Wilson for the killing of young Michael Brown and there has been a rush to condemn the African American community for lashing out in the violent manner that is has.
Yet many of these very same voices that have been so vocal in condemning the violence of African Americans in Ferguson MO and elsewhere have been loudly silent in the wake of the firebombing by whitesupremacists of the church where Michael Brown was baptized. In fact one of the most under reported aspects of this rise of racial hatred directed at the African American community these past few years has been the alarming rise in the number of African American churches being firebombed & burned to the ground by racists, white supremacists, and the Ku Klux Klan.

This thus begs the following questions. If we African Americans are not safe from violence in the streets, in our homes, and even in our churches, then where are we safe and if we cannot find protection from this violence in law enforcement and redress for it in the courts, then where can we find justice at all?
When people are denied sanctuary from violence even in their places of worship and when they are denied protection from this violence from law enforcement and peaceful redress of the harm done by this violence through the courts, the society loses the right to condemn those so victimized from seeking redress through violence. Treat a human being like an animal and you will get an animalistic response in return. This is not only true of black people, it is true of white people; of people of all races, creeds, genders, religions, and sexual orientations. It is true of all living things, period.
So while one can say that these acts of violence are a failure of individual character, they are also in a larger sense a failure of our society’s character as a whole; of our collective tolerance of the tolerable, and of our wrong headed belief that sweet sounding words can by themselves eradicate the bitterness of oppression; of the continuing evil that continues to plague an entire group of men, women, and children who’se only “crime” is the color of their skin.

The Ku Klux Klan is the American ISIS. They are a terrorist organization that has maimed & murdered far more Americans than all the other terrorist organizations in the world combined. The fact that they have white skin, are mostly clean shaven, and look like any other white American does not change the fact that they are terrorists.

So for those of you who have such a huge problem with African Americans in Ferguson MO shooting the KKK in response to their carrying out their threats to shoot demonstrators in Ferguson, would you have the same problem if we had actual members of ISIS in Ferguson MO threatening to do the same thing to those demonstrators and for the same reasons stated by the KKK?

It seems that none of you who are taking we African Americans to task for calling for the African American community in Ferguson to engage in armed self defense in the event they are attacked by the KKK would have a problem with this type of response if the terrorists in question wore turbans, a beard, and were toting the Koran instead of a Bible.

You all need to do some serious soul searching now because you are completely wrong on this one. The Ku Klux Klan has no damn business marching or patrolling anywhere in these United States. It is a terroristic organization and a hate group which was founded on racial hatred & religious intolerance and has more often than not engaged in mob violence under the guise of vigilante justice.

You don’t defend this, you don’t make excuses for it, and you sure don’t tell its would be victims that they have no business trying to unilaterally blast its members off the face of the Earth if they are attacked by it. You have no more right to tell we African Americans this than you would to tell any American not to take matters into his/her own hands and shoot down an actual member of ISIS who was caught opening fire on our fellow citizens.

A terrorist is a terrorist, period, and being a terrorist it matters not what color they are, what religion they follow, or what nationality to which they belong. Again, a terrorist is a terrorist and the Ku Klux Klan is a terrorist organization and should be treated by ALL American citizens regardless of race, color, or creed as such. Period. End of story.

A part of me wishes Hillary Clinton won the presidency in 2008; not because I preferred Clinton to President Obama but because he didn’t deserve the backstabbing done to him by that very political party he returned to power and relevance. Perhaps it would have been better for all concerned that the Democratic Party retained the illusion of being for full equality and of having the guts to stand up and fight for what it says it believes in.

To go this far and then turn tail & run as it has in regards to this president I just find to be the most bitter pill and the most damnable outrage I have ever had to swallow in my forty plus years of following politics. This is just me and while I know a lot of folks who I care about deeply about strongly disagrees with my position, I personally cannot see myself supporting any Democratic candidate for office anytime soon; if ever. If push comes to shove I will vote for that candidate rather than vote for the Republican alternative but it will clearly be a a hold my nose and settle my stomach sort of affair but because I’m not ever going to forget or forgive this party’s betrayal of its president & its principles this past year.

It is the rarest of things for my anger at something to so solidify that it becomes permanent; so rare in fact that whenever it does happen I am fully aware of it and beyond persuading to feel otherwise no matter who is doing the persuading. Such is the case now. I can’t accept this and I won’t accept it; not now. Not ever. What the Democratic Party did to President Obama and its base was unforgivable and made the party itself beyond redemption. I know that I will never feel otherwise and what’s more I know that I will never make any apologies for feeling this way whatsoever

Let’s not kid ourselves; sexism is just as pervasive in this country as racism is. It’s just not front & center now because of the skin color of the current occupant of the White House. Yet mark my word; for damn every vote Hillary Clinton will win because she’s white, she’l lose because she’s a woman. It is sad but true that just as many Democrats refused to vote for President Obama because they objected to the color of his skin, so too will many Democrats refuse to vote for Hillary Clinton because they object to her gender.

This is one of the reasons I don’t think she’s a sure thing in 2016 and if successful in capturing the presidency, that she’l necessarily have an easier time of it than President Obama has. We can be certain that all of the most vile, sexist, chaivinistic stereotypes of women in general and strong women in particular are being dusted off and being made ready for use once that colored fellow is out of the White House.

It’s going to get ugly and it’s going to get ugly mighty fast and as a man I am already feeling ashamed of what so many knot headed, ignorant, sexist male chauvinistic pee wits are about to do and what sadly, some are doing already.

To those Conservative/Republican friends of mine (yes, I have a few) who say that we can’t keep raising the debt ceiling because doing so only encourages us to keep spending money we don’t have let me remind them that we only need to borrow money to pay our bills when we are running a deficit. On January 20th, 2001; the final day of Democratic President Bill Clinton’s presidency, America did not have a deficit; it had a surplus. We did not need to borrow money to pay our bills because our government was bringing in more money than it was spending.

So what happened over the next eight years? Why Republican President George W. Bush, with the support & encouragement of those very Republicans in Congress who are now screaming about the dangers of deficits and deficit spending gave tax cuts to the wealthy and funded two wars and a prescription drug plan without raising taxes in order to meet the added expense of these three things. As a result our surplus disappeared, we again had a deficit, and Congress again had to go back to borrowing money in order to acquire the funds needed to pay the bills it wracked up.

Had it not been for the deficit spending of President Bush and the Republicans in Congress we would by this time have been so far ahead in terms of bringing in revenue that exceeded our expenses that we would no longer need to raise the debt ceiling today; in fact we wouldn’t need the debt ceiling period because our nation’s coffers would be growing exponentially by the day; providing more than enough money to fund Social Security & Medicare to infinity; rebuild our roads & infrastructure, build high speed rail, and eventually lower unemployment to the point where we could conceivably eradicate poverty itself, and reduce the number of economic classes in the United States to two; the wealthy and the middle class.

This is the sane fiscal path President Clinton and the Democrats in Congress set us on. It was a Republican President and Republicans in Congress alone who screwed this up. No one else bears any responsibility for the resulting economic calamity for it was of course the Republicans who held both the presidency and the House of Representatives in the first six years of the Bush Administration when these destructive economic policies took root. In fact, it was Republican Vice President Dick Cheney who said in 2004 that “deficits do not matter.” Well of course he was wrong but as anyone who has ever worked with a budget will tell you; once you are in a deficit situation you must first momentarily increase that deficit and spend more money and spend that money wisely in order to eventually get out of it.

That’s what President Clinton did in the 1990’s when he reordered our national fiscal priorities in order to undo the damage done to our economy caused by exploding deficits under the Republican presidential administrations of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. That’s what President Obama has been doing since he took office in 2009 and as a result our national debt has been dropping at a faster rate than it ever has in our history and but for Republican obstructionism in Congress we may very well have been operating at a surplus already with no need to even worry about the debt ceiling because we’d be bringing in more than enough money to pay our bills like we were doing at the end of the Clinton Administration.

So to my Conservative/Republican friends who keep complaining about runaway spending & deficits, don’t be pointing your fingers at this president and those of us on the Left because we didn’t vote for the fiscal idiots who put this country in this fix; you did! This disaster was caused by one party and one party alone; the Republican Party and so if there is any blame to be had; if you really wish to know who is actually responsible for this, then all you have to do is point to that mirror. The person looking back at you will be the person who bears ultimate responsibility for our national debt and our need to raise the debt ceiling for it is the person looking back at you who voted for those people who turned a national deficit back into a deficit.

If you want to better understand the mindset of African American Conservatives; especially those who are so open with their hatred of President Obama think of some of those studies done in the lead up to 1954’s Supreme Court decision Brown versus Education which declared “Separate But Equal” to be unconstitutional. In order to establish the devastating psychological effects of racial segregation, one of these studies involved showing little black girls two dolls; one white and one black.

When those little black girls were asked which of the two dolls was beautiful; they always pointed to the white doll. When they were asked which of the two dolls was ugly, they always pointed to the black doll, and when they were asked which of the two dolls they looked at looked like them, they would first freeze, point to the black doll, and then begin to cry.

That is the place where these virulent Conservative African American haters of the first African American President of the United States really are. They can no more conceive of the idea of someone who looks like them occupying the highest office in the land than those little black girls of so long ago could conceive of those little black dolls that looked like them of being beautiful.

To them their color is a curse. It is reminder, at least to them, of their second class status as human beings. In order to feel even remotely meaningful they have to distance themselves from who they are; from what they look like because in their eyes anyone who looks like them is inferior; anyone who looks like them who succeeds is a fraud for in their eyes “inferior” people; people who look like them, have absolutely no business being President of the United States; they have no business being the First Lady.
In their eyes, if either the President or First Lady looks like them then something has to be wrong because they do not see themselves as being worthy of that high office. To them whiteness equals success whereas blackness equals failure. That’s how their brains are wired. That’s how they view the world and that is how they see themselves for in the end, like those little black girls of yesteryear, African American Conservatives have a pigmentation problem; that pigmentation being their own.

The Republican Party preaches the virtues of smaller government; of government that is less invasive and respects the individual liberties of the American people. Yet there are few forms of government that are less invasive and less respectful of individual liberties that those state governments dominated by white male Republicans who are pushing through draconian pieces of legislation that literally allows the state to shove its proverbial male hand up a woman’s uterus and determine for her all the important decisions affecting her physical, mental, and reproductive health.

The proverbial white male hand of the Republican Party has placed its hand where it doesn’t belong and in state after state is using that hand as the rapist uses his; to bend women to their will by force of law and violating her humanity and most basic human rights; rendering the efficacy of her humanity moot and reducing her to the level of chattel at best and a piece of raw meat at worst. This state sanctioned rape of American women by the white male hand of the Republican Party should be roundly condemned by all Americans regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or economic class. Let us as a nation say as one to these sick, perverted, sexist, chauvinistic rape crazy white Republican men to pull their filthy hands out of women’s uterus, to stop figuratively squeezing their breasts and their posteriors like they are a piece of fruit, their property, and existing only to satisfy their primitive prehistoric urges to assert male dominance!

Let us do all that we can to break their grip and if necessary break their hand as well! If you as a man truly love your mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, niece, girlfriend, or wife, then you cannot for any rhyme or reason not speak out and fight against what this male Republican hand is doing now for if the rights of one woman is violated then the rights of all women are equally violated. To tolerate these restrictive laws, to allow the Republican white male hand to remain within a woman’s uterus is to proverbially countenance the metaphorical rape of you own mother, your own grandmother, your own sister, your own daughter, your own niece, girlfriend, and wife. You are nothing less than an accessory to the rapist if you do not speak out against and fight to repeal these laws for you are saying in effect that a woman has no rights that any man is bound to respect.

It takes a real man to respect a woman’s rights for only a weak man fears a woman who is his equal. Only a lesser man seeks to substitute his lack of manhood by asserting a false sense of male dominance over a woman for in the end it is only the weak and the cowardly of males who think that the only way they can feel whole and strong is to denigrate, oppress, and weaken others. In the end these repressive laws stripping away a woman’s right to make her own decisions regarding her mental, physical, and reproductive health are not a reflection of the weakness of the women they seek to subjugate.

Rather they are a reflection of the weakness and moral depravity of those white Republican males who seek to subjugate them. They are the ultimate losers here for make no mistake these laws will be repealed. Their dirty hands will be pulled from within the uterus of American women, and will, far sooner than later, bring us to that day when a woman’s rights are respected; when gender discrimination, state sanctioned rape, pay inequality, and second class treatment, are a permanent part of the past. We will not lose this fight for to lose is to betray every woman who ever lived; to say in effect that she, whoever she is and was, made a mistake in bringing us into this world; in raising us, nurturing us, and teaching us. Better for the world itself that the entire male gender dies off and humanity becomes extinct than to allow this injustice to continue for such is its profound evil that our failure to end it will forfeit our very right to exist on this Earth.

Today my friends I want to discuss income inequality; namely the difference in the amount of money a man earns and a woman who does the same job and works the same hours. Now it is generally understood that on the average for every dollar a man earns a woman only earns seventy seven cents. So forgetting deductions for taxes, Social Security etc; for every $10.00 a man earns a woman earns $7.70.

Now let’s say the man and the woman work an eight hour day. In the course of that day the man will earn $80.00 whereas the woman will earn only $61.60 because remember the woman twenty three cents for every dollar she makes doing the same job and working the same amount of hours as the man and she is losing these twenty three cents not because the man is doing the job better but only because she is a woman. In short she is losing $18.40 a day for no other reason than that she’s a woman.

Now let’s go to the typical forty hour work week. A man earning $10.00 per hour working eight hours a day and five days a week will earn $400.00 because of course eight times five is forty. Now a woman who only earns only seventy seven cents for every dollar a man makes will earn what? Multiply $7.70 by 40 and you will come to $308.00. In other words a woman who does the same job and works the same hours as a man will earn $92.00 less than a man for no other reason than that she is a woman.

Now let’s look at how income inequality stacks up over the course of a month. With a forty hour workweek you are talking about on the average four weeks so multiply forty by four and you come to one hundred and sixty. So a man who earns $10.00 hour will over the course of 160 hours earn $1,600.00. That will be his monthly taken. Now factoring in income inequality where the woman will only earn seventy seven cents for every dollar a man makes, what will be her take for the month? Multiply $7.70 times 160 and you will come up with $1,232.00. In other words with income inequality a woman who does the same job and works the same number of hours as a man will earn $368.00 less per month than the man not because she doesn’t do the job as well but only because she is a woman.

Now let’s top it off by looking at yearly income. A person works one hundred and sixty hours per month and there are twelve months per year. So to come up with the number of hours worked per year multiply 160 times 12 and you will come up come up with 1920 working hours per year. So a man earning $10.00 per hour will earn how much if he works 1920 hours per year? Multiply 10 times 1920 and you will come up with a yearly income of $19,200.00 for the man. Now a woman earning seventy seven cents for every dollar a man earns will make how much over the course of the year doing the same job and working the same number of hours. Multiply her $7.70 times 1920 and you will come up with a yearly income of $14,784.00. Now with income inequality how much less will the woman make per year solely because she is a woman. Subtract $14,784.00 from $19,200.00 and you will come up with $4,416.00.

So here is the deal with gender inequality. With a woman earning only seventy seven cents for every dollar a man makes who does the same job and works the same number of hours that the man does will earn $18.40 less per day, $92.00 less per week, $368.00 less per month, and $4,416.00 less per year than the man who does the same job and works the same amount of hours and earns $10.00 per hour, $80.00 per day, $400.00 per week, $1600.00 per month, and $19,200.00 per year!

That my friends is income inequality! Not only is it wrong and immoral; from a purely economic standpoint it is profoundly stupid since that lost income for a woman is taxable income; it is money that if paid could be used to help fund our schools, police & fire departments, among other things. It is taxable income that could be used to put additional funds back into Social Security to be used for higher Social Security payments upon retirement or in the event of disability. It is extra money that could be used to pay for food, clothing, housing; money that could be returned to the economic pot in the form of buying goods & other products; increasing the demand for them and necessitating the number of more people to help meet those demands and lower unemployment and pull more people out of poverty.

In short, income inequality based on gender ultimately shortchanges us all for it collectively lowers the quality of life for the nation, it makes woman economic second class citizens, and it starves our economy of needed funds in the form of additional taxable income. That is why it must be addressed and why it must be eliminated for income inequality has no place in a society that professes to be free for its existence denotes the absence of full freedom and is a sign of economic stupidity of the highest order.

It sticks in my craw that not one member of the Republican Party, not one member of the Tea Party, and not one member of the Libertarian Party called out that racist Texas yahoo who waved the Confederate flag and gave a rebel yell in front of the White House during the government shutdown; not one and I am seething over that. I remember calling my parents in New York to say goodbye to them in January of 1987 because I was half convinced that I was going to get killed when I participated in second Cummings GA march the following day and so did they.

I remember the Confederate flags being waved by racist lunatics who had shotguns clearly visible in the back seat. I remember seeing signs like “N*****s ain’t got no God!” and of a little boy getting slapped silly by his parents after smiling and waving at me as I marched past. I remember the sharpshooters on every overpass as our bus made the 35 mile trip from Atlanta to Cummings and I recall being told by the marshal on board not to rest my head against the window for fear that a sniper would shoot it off.

I recall the sign “Welcome to Cummings!” right next to which stood three people holding a large flag of the Ku Klux Klan; the flag that had a cross with a drop of blood in the center. I remember entering the town square just at its edge and being pressed against National Guardsman who stood between us and a murderous mob. I remember my college roommate saying “E, you wanted to see a Ku Klux Klansman well there he is!” and then looking over and seeing one of those clowns in full white sheets & pointed hood waving the Stars & Bars.

Yet most of all I remember seeing those three helicopters hovering overhead, the lowest of which was no more than twenty five or thirty feet above us and telling folks nearby that if one of those racist yahoos managed to shoot it down or it crashed on its own accord we were all dead. I remember how after the demonstration was over and we began to make our way back to the buses along the route from which we’d come, I broke ranks and rushed to the aid of a woman who had fainted and then hearing loud screaming as I stepped away after realizing that she was okay; only to be cursed out by my roommate who said that in the commotion I had nearly backed into that very Ku Klux Klansman I had seen earlier and who had caused the Guardsman to lower their face masks and charge into the crowd after calling one of them the “n” word and trying to throw something, probably a panic bomb designed to trigger a fatal stampede, and of course I recall that guard ordering me to look away as the National Guardsmen began to make their charge and my responding “Hell no! If I’m to die here I’m determined to see who does what!”

So from where I sit, the fact that those in the GOP, the Tea & Libertarian Parties stood silent in the face of that atrocity in front of the White House tells me that they are complicit in it; even if it is only a complicity of silence. You see people were enslaved because of that flag; people died because of it, and our nation was almost destroyed because of it. I am not interested in hearing sugarcoated platitudes or excuses for that kind of hateful conduct; to me words of dismissive justification are empty because I almost lost my life opposing that flag and for standing up against the hate and evil it represents.

To me that flag and all those who support it for whatever rhyme or reason are my mortal enemies. There is no middle ground; no room for compromise, accommodation, or debate with anyone or any party that thinks it is in any way acceptable; even if that acceptance is conveyed through one’s refusal to speak out against it. The Confederate flag is pure evil, period, and by either embracing or showing tacit acceptance of that flag through a refusal to condemn it, the GOP, and the Tea & Libertarian Parties are equally evil; evil not only in their embrace of a hateful symbol of slavery, segregation, and Judge Lynch but of treason as well for make no mistake, that flag was ultimately created for one reason and one reason alone; to keep human beings enslaved and to forever rip the United States of America apart and if that wasn’t the essence of evil then I don’t know what is.

There are two words that will forever haunt me from this latest political crisis in Washington and those two words are what if? What if we Democrats had been this united when we went up against Richard Nixon in 1968 and 1972? What if we Democrats had been this united when we went up against Ronald Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush in 1980, 1984, and 1988?

What if we Democrats had been this united in the Congressional midterms in 1994 and 2010? What if we Democrats had been this united when we went up against George W. Bush in 2000 & 2004, and what if we Democrats had been this united in the January 2010 Massachusetts senatorial race? What if? What if? What if?

If the lessons of these past two weeks have taught us nothing else, it is that we Democrats have not lost as we have for the past forty five years do to a dearth of good ideas. We have lost due to our lack of a backbone. We have lost because we lacked the courage to stand up& fight for our convictions. We have lost because we have allowed ourselves to be bullied, and we have lost because we showed the fear of cowardice in the face of zealotry.

In short we have lost because we have not been united, because we have not recognized our strength, and the power we have to make this a more just nation and mold a better world. We have lost because we have not been true to ourselves.

So let that be our lesson; that united we stand, divided we fall, and that whenever we fall, whenever we falter, so too does America.

Let’s cut to the chase and that is what Speaker John Boehner and his Tea Party Hatriots are doing in regards to shutting down the Federal Government and threatening the full faith and credit of this country has little, if any, to do with differences in policy and everything to do with a hatred of the color of the skin of the President of the United States. In Speaker John Boehner’s eyes and the eyes of his fellow haters of the GOP & the Far Right, the sight of a person of color occupying the presidency is an abomination of the highest order. Just as the exploits of Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the magnificent play of Jackie Robinson on a Major League Baseball diamond in 1947 did, the presidency of Barack Hussein Obama turns turns all notions of white supremacy and a master race on its ear.

Every action that Speaker John Boehner is taking right now & every utterance he makes at this point is saying in effect that “the American people do not want a black man calling the shots.” That’s it in a nutshell for what else about President Obama besides the color of his skin can any reasonable or sane person find objectionable? This man, the product of a mixed race marriage and growing up without his father managed to put himself through Columbia University and secured a law degree from Harvard University while becoming the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review. Rather than seek to enrich himself after acquiring his education he chose instead to help the least fortunate among us by serving as a community organizer.

He later taught law itself and married a magnificent woman who was an outstanding lawyer in her own right and he went on to be a faithful husband to his wife and a wonderful father to his two little girls. No shadow of personal scandal has come close to touching this man and since assuming the presidency he has conducted himself in a cool, calm, and compassionate manner that has brought credit to the presidency and the United States itself.

President Obama is the American Dream made real and so it is not surprising that his rise has earned the enmity of those to whom America’s promise of full equality & equal opportunity for all are nothing more than sweet sounding soundbites to be uttered whenever convenient. For people like Speaker John Boehner may speak of their belief in freedom for all but as proven by their thoughts, words, and deeds what they really believe in is freedom for the few. What they really believe in is an America where the poor and the middle class cater to the needs & whims of the privileged and the rich; an America where white is always right, and white males should always reign supreme.

President Obama strips these Rights Wingers feelings of entitlement arising out of their white skin & male gender like an emperor is stripped of his clothes, revealing their naked bigotry and their intellectually puniness to the world. That, along with the color of his skin, is why they so hate him because by merely existing and holding his high office, President Obama exposes the lie that is their lives and casts a harsh light on the vanity of their false pride and phony distinctions.

This is why those of us who really believe in the American Dream, and so celebrate this country’s greatness and promise, honors this president and holds him in that high esteem that through his life & living example he come to so richly deserve. For in the end when we honor the best among us we celebrate the best within ourselves forever glorifying the kind of people we are and the type of nation we may yet become.

The Republican Party is now where Nazi Germany was in December of 1944 and January of 1945. They have lost the war & its final defeat is imminent. Yet like the Nazi Germany of that time it has launched its own Battle of the Bulge and instituted a reign of terror upon the American people which is the political equivalent of those V-1 buzz bombs and V-2 rockets that the Germans unleashed against English towns & cities in those closing months of World War Two when the outcome had long since been decided.

Among the timid the current onslaught seems like the end of the world but in the end, once the smoke clears, we will see as the Allied troops in Europe & the stout citizens of England who crawled from the rubble of their freshly bombed cities & towns saw, that these last desperate fusillades from a lost cause are in the larger scheme of things in Shakespeare’s words “full of sound & fury and signifying nothing.”

What we are witnessing now is the Last Stand of the Republican Party and the roars we hear are the death rattles of Conservatism itself. Final victory is at hand. We can only lose at this point if we yank defeat from the jaws of victory ourselves and that can only happen if we give credence to that which is not credible; that the Republican Party and its racist reactionary agenda can yet prevail.

It cannot and it will not. So let us continue to march as Patton marched. Let us march to the capital of Conservatism as Patton and the Soviets marched towards Berlin and as the allies blew up that huge Swastika on the top of the Reichstag, let us symbolically blow up that multi colored elephant that is the symbol of the Republican Party and which has come to represent to America & the world much of what that Swastika represents to this day; hate, racism, oppression, and intolerance.

This is our time, America’s time, justice’s time, full equality’s time, and that being so let us finish the task of finally eradicating the evil that is the Republican Party and then celebrate a long & hard won victory over its forces of retrogress & oppression knowing that history will one day say of us as Churchill rightly predicted it would one day say of Britain back then that “this was our finest hour!”

Today the Republican Party, through the demand made by the House GOP in return for raising the debt limit ceiling, committed an act of sedition against the people and the government of the United States. To seek to extort the president and hold hostage the American & global economies to ideological demands in return for not destroying the full faith & credit of the United States and in the process tanking the US & global economies, is nothing less than an act of treason. It is not only an act of treason against the government & people of these United States, it is an act of treason against all peoples and all governments all over the world for the lives of all will be adversely affected by this.

House Speaker John Boehner has now forever entered the Halls of Infamy for being the face and the defacto leader of this radical band of traitors otherwise known as House Republicans; it will be his face and his name that will be forever mocked and scorned as the Face of Treason! He will go down in history as the Benedict Arnold of our time.

If for whatever reason the demands of these House Republicans are met then any future aggrieved minority will feel empowered to thwart the will of the majority by taking the nation & its national interests hostage until their demands are met. This my friends with be the end of democracy, of majority rule which makes democracy possible, and with it the end of the United States itself for make no mistake, it will mean nothing less than an overthrow of our Constitution and a descent to mob rule.

Therefore the choice before us is clear and that choice is one in which we must now choose between destroying the full faith and credit of the United States or destroying the United States itself. Unless these traitors surrender there is no third option. For the sake of America we must choose the former for make no mistake, America and the world will eventually recover; the Republican Party most certainly will not. Sending this nation into default will be a suicidal act for the GOP and if the price for its annihilation is a tanked national & global economy then so be it for as high as the price for such a default will be, it will be a price more than worth being paid in return for the political extinction of this hateful & thoroughly un-American of political parties.

So stand with President Obama and say no to these traitors! Say no to their extortion! Say no to their sedition and say no to their blackmail! Call these traitors out for being the traitors that they are and spread the word far and wide that here in America treason will not stand! That we the people of these United States will ultimately prevail over these traitors within our midst and ensure in the words of President Abraham Lincoln that “government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the Earth!”

These so called Liberal white folks who because of their Democratic/Progressive credentials feel that they have the authority and the moral gravitas to lecture me and other African Americans on the true meaning of the life & legacy of Dr. King in general and what it is to be black in America in particular are in my opinion nothing more than sugar coated versions of Archie Bunker.

They’re bigots, pure and simple because they feel deep in their hearts that they know what is best for people like me; that we people of color need them to think for us and analyze things for us because we are in such dire straights due to the oppression visited upon our race that we are incapable of doing any of these things on our own and without their help.

The fact of the matter is that that those white people who are truly color blind never, ever, go there with us because they take our humanity as a given and our equality as a fact. They respect the uniqueness of the African American experience and do not have the arrogant presumption that they can understand what it is to be black just because they are sympathetic to our cause.

It is these warmed over Archie Bunkers of the Left that I confess to being most uncomfortable with for it is very easy to spot a Conservative bigot; not so much a Liberal one since a Conservative bigot does a far poorer job of hiding their bigotry. In short, all we African Americans expect from anyone is respect; a respect of our history, our efficacy as human beings, and the understanding that we, like all human beings, understand our own minds and hearts better than anyone else because we live with ourselves each and every day and share the African American experience every hour, every minute, and every second of our lives.

Just because I’m not gay doesn’t mean I’m going to give a pass to someone using as homophobic slur just because the person uttering that slur happens to be a Liberal Democrat or a fellow African American. Wrong is just wrong and it doesn’t matter who you are or where you stand on the political side of things; if you commit such a wrong then you’ve got to be called out on it.

For make no mistake, anyone who will use such a slur to describe a person of another race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation in front of your, will invariably refer to you in such terms when you are beyond this person’s sight or hearing.

A person’s race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation is never the stuff of jokes for the derogatory terms historically used to describe people according to their race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation have and continue to be used for the primary purpose of inflicting maximum injury on their intended targets through demonization and dehumanization. No good ever comes from thinking of another human being in a manner that strips that person of his/her dignity, that makes that person feel less than fully human, and gives license to others to deny them their most basic human rights.

All of us, myself included, has at one time or another been guilty of doing this in some shape or form, even if we were not aware that we were doing this. In a society such as hours, it is impossible not to develop bigoted thoughts & feeling during some course of our lives because we are all at one time or another bombarded with messages highlighting our differences rather than our common humanity.

The thing that most people miss is that bigotry is ultimately a reflection of the character flaws of the person being the bigot themselves rather than the targets of their bigotry. Is a black person less than fully human because someone dislikes that person because they are black? Is a white person less than fully human because someone dislikes that person because that person is white? Is a woman inferior to a man because a man thinks women are inferior to men? Is a given religion less than valid because one happens to practice a different religion, and is the love that binds two people together not wholly love because the people who are in love happen to be of a different sexual orientation?

The answer is no to all of these questions for no one, no one at all, is qualified to make such a determination. No one is qualified to say that another human being is less human than they are because that human being happens to be of a different race, a different gender, practices a different religion, or is of a different sexual orientation for we are all, first and foremost, human beings and no human being is fit to determine the humanity of another because of those differences that are beyond all human control.

This is the heart of the issue and why bigotry, in all its forms & manifestations is so immoral, so wrong, and never, ever, a joking matter.

by Eric Smith (Notes) on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 2:36pm
On the night of April 3rd, 1968, in what would tragically be the final speech of his life, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said the following:

“All we say to America” said Dr. King is ‘Be true to what you said on paper.’ If I lived in China or even Russia, or any totalitarian country, maybe I could understand some of these illegal injunctions. Maybe I could understand the denial of certain basic First Amendment privileges, because they hadn’t committed themselves to that over there. But somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right.”

Today, forty five years after Dr. King uttered these words, far too many Americans do not understand the true meaning of our flag.  They do not grasp the uniqueness of what it is to be a real American patriot.  To them freedom applies only to themselves.  To them the benefits of our Democracy  is theirs to enjoy alone though they expect everyone else to gladly fight along with them to preserve their rights even though they would deny those same rights to others.
They have the audacity to actually question the patriotism of those of different races, creeds, genders, and sexual orientation who to dare fight for those very freedoms and opportunities that they regard as their birthright.  They behave as though such rights are theirs to give and accuse those who are not satisfied with the pace of expanding the reach of Liberty with being ungrateful;  as if those who are denied those rights they are entitled to at birth, should show gratitude towards who those who had no right to deny them these rights they are now enjoying in the first place.
These white people  in the Republican Party and of a Conservative mindset are always railing against us African Americans of  being lazy and greedy.  They use the term Affirmative Action as the rest of us use an expletive, forgetting of course that they themselves are the beneficiaries of the greatest, most generous Affirmative Action program in the history of this nation; that Affirmative Action being their white skins.
If you are born white in general and a white male in particular in this country, no one ever questions whether or not you will have the chance to rise from poverty, to get a good education, to work at a well paying job, or even become President of the United States.  If you are born white and male in this country then you don’t have to worry about your rights being denied at all.  You don’t have to worry about your legitimacy and your qualifications being questioned for a certain university or a particular job because of the way you look.
If you are white in America then you don’t have to worry about being followed around by the proprietor of some store assuming you’re a criminal who’s about to rob the place.  If you’re white in America you don’t have to worry about being stopped by the police while walking through a good neighborhood who suspect by mere dint of your skin’s pigmentation alone that you’ve committed or are about to commit, a crime.  If you’re white in America you don’t have to worry about being shot by a self appointed  neighborhood vigilante even if you are  wearing a hoodie and what’s more you can be walking around carrying a gun, to say nothing of a bag of skittles, and still have little to be worried about.
If you’re white in America, no one automatically assumes just by looking at you that you’re uneducated, illiterate, on Welfare, a drug addict, or an ex con regardless of what kind of clothes you’re wearing. It has always been that way in this country but only now things are really beginning to change.  More and more people are waking up to the fact that this state of affairs runs counter to the true meaning of this flag; that it  just isn’t right.
Yet these folks  in the Republican Party and the Far Right  I’ve mentioned above are now raising hell because all of a sudden they have to share their freedoms, rights, and liberties with everybody; freedoms, rights, and liberties  that they never had any right to hoard for themselves in the first place.  They are screaming at the top of their lungs that their rights are being taken away.  That they’re going to take “our country back!”  Excuse me  but this country doesn’t belong just to them.   It never has.  It has always belonged to all of us have played a key role in sustaining it, protecting it, and making it great. These people don’t get to claim exclusive ownership of that which they hijacked stole and wrongly denied to others.
This discrepancy was pointed out in a speech President Abraham Lincoln gave at the Sanitary Fair in Baltimore MD on April 18, 1864 when he said the following:

“The world has never had a good definition of the word liberty, and the American people, just now, are much in want of one. We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men’s labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name———liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names———liberty and tyranny.

“The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep’s throat, for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as a liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty, especially as the sheep was a black one. Plainly the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of the word liberty; and precisely the same difference prevails to-day among us human creatures, even in the North, and all professing to love liberty. Hence we behold the processes by which thousands are daily passing from under the yoke of bondage, hailed by some as the advance of liberty, and bewailed by others as the destruction of all liberty.”

Needless to say, the wolfs of President Lincoln’s time are the Republicans, Tea Party members, Libertarians, and Conservatives of today.  They are the ones raging because they are not being allowed to exercise what they believe is their right to deny rights to others because they happen to dislike the color of their skin, their gender, their religion, and their sexual orientation.  They assert their right to do to others as they please while at the same time claiming that others do not have the right to do to them as they please because it would be a violation of their rights.
This is the root of their problem.  They are finally being forced to play by the same set of rules as everyone else and they are collectively  throwing a national temper tantrum as a result.  All it really proves is that these people never really cared about this country or its flag  in the first place.  I mean the heart of true Americanism is generosity and tolerance.  Without both of these things you can’t say that you are really a patriot for these are the foundations of our freedom; these traits are what makes us unique among all the nations in the world.
Our flag has meaning that is true but that meaning only counts for anything if it has the same meaning for everybody.  As Jackie Robinson himself once said “There’s not an American in this country free until every one of us is free.”  That is what these Republicans/Conservatives refuse to see and find impossible to accept and so therefore if any one’s patriotism is to be rightly questioned it is theirs because the rest of us, through  our embracing of diversity and fair play are living the true meaning of the American flag while they, through their hostility to diversity and opposition to fair play, are not.  It’s as simple as that.

“42”  Jackie Robinson, Racism And Lingering Inequality
Eric Smith April 14, 2013

What do people like Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, Glenn Beck, and Donald Trump all have in common with the Jackie Robinson movie biopic “42”? It is that these people and all who think along their lines are the Ben Chapmans, Herb Pennocks, and Enos Slaughters of today. Only their use of particular words have changed but when it comes to their attitudes and feelings about President Obama their attitudes are identical; the hate is exactly the same.

For at the heart of all of this is the feeling on these peoples part and the feeling of the Republican Party in general and the Far Right in particular, is that no African American is qualified to represent America in so prestigious a position. In 1947 it was Major League baseball. In 2013 it is the Presidency of the United States. Twenty, twenty five, thirty years down the line, these bigots of now will sing the praises of President Obama just as the bigots of yesteryear sing the praises of Jackie Robinson today.

The movie “42” should be a reminder of the truth of the old saying that “the more things change, the more they remain the same.” So when you see “42”, and you see Philadelphia Phillies manager Ben Chapman hurl racial epithets in Jackie Robinson’s face and you St. Louis Cardinal Enos Slaughter spike Robinson high on the leg remember that you are seeing through people like Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, Glenn Beck, and Donald Trump history repeating itself and then ask yourself, if you’re a Republican or Conservative, why are you continuing to tolerate this knowing it is so wrong?

If this type of conduct was wrong in Mr. Robinson’s time, isn’t it equally wrong in the time of President Obama? Why continue to make the same mistakes the Chapmans and Slaughters did knowing that these are mistakes, and one day being forced as they were, to make future amends for their reprehensible conduct? That is the main lesson I hope people take way from this movie; that Jackie Robinson endured what he endured not only to break down the racial barriers of his time but for all time; to create a world where the first black, first female, first gay, first anything, does not ruffle a single feather or trigger an explosion of such racial hatred; where here we are all truly equal and that qualifications & character rather than color should be the sole criteria which determines how far we should advance.
